Collaboration Key for Sponsored Research and Financial Business Process Improvement Projects


The implementation of ConnectCarolina brought many opportunities for business operations across the University to reassess procedures and practices, maximizing use of the new system.

This was particularly true in the Division of Finance and the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR). The EA, Finance, and Workforce Strategy, Equity and Engagement teams worked with these business owners to implement new application features, develop efficiencies in system use and improve reporting capabilities.

Working in concert, the business owners and EA team developed strategies that led to more efficient invoicing of sponsors for UNC-Chapel Hill’s research expenditures and financial reporting on sponsored research, the review and assurance of accurate data for effort reporting and more effective procedures for closing the financial month and transmission of data to the state. These activities involve complex planning and coordination of efforts that will be ongoing for some time, but gains are already being seen by staff.
