ITS Combats Phishing on Multiple Fronts

To combat a dramatic increase in phishing messages in 2016, ITS groups collaborated on multiple anti-phishing initiatives, including testing anti-phishing tools, establishing new Service Desk processes for responding to reports of phishing, implementing an educational campaign targeting students, and conducting a summer 2016 phishing-awareness campaign designed to increase staff and faculty awareness of best practices to avoid becoming the victim of a phishing scam.

In addition, ITS enlisted the campus IT and communications communities to help share messages that educate and reinforce the importance of phishing awareness. Also, during the summer, Chief Information Security Officer Kevin Lanning presented information on phishing at a Tec Talk for campus IT professionals.

Information Security, Infrastructure & Operations and User Support & Engagement, with assistance from ITS Communications, were key to the anti-phishing efforts.
