Virtual Computing Lab upgraded

Between October and December 2015, ITS Research Computing upgraded some equipment in its Virtual Computing Lab. a virtualization service that provides users with anytime, anywhere access to custom application environments created specifically for their use.

Research Computing added a Dell M1000e chassis to the VCL infrastructure. This contains 32 Dell M420 blade servers, each with 16 processor cores, 96Gb of RAM, 2-80Gb SSD drives and 2-10GbE network interfaces.

The addition greatly expanded the capacity to run a mix of virtual and physical servers in the VCL, while at the same time enabling the group to retire some of the older hardware, some of which was seven years old, having been re-purposed from a past compute cluster.
